Trash Eating Robot: An Original Concept by Ren to Help Save Mother Earth
At Ren’s previous school, the grade school have this Science Expo every quarter. The topic was given by their Science teacher, but there were 2 instances that he let the students decide what topics to report. This is usually a family project. We makeΒ a Power Point presentation and Ren reports usingΒ a projector in class (not recommended, but kids are visual so having this gets their attention). My rule of thumb for every report of Ren is that the words used should be simple for everybody to easily understand. Also, it should be entertaining because Ren loves it when he makes his classmates laugh.
I previously shared one of my fave Science Expo reports of Ren, watch it HERE
The Science teacher usually give awards every quarter, the Best in Expo got an exemption in a Midterm exam while those who have special awards (which is not given every quarter) got some additional points in quizzes.
Ren only got 1 Best in Science Expo award when he was in Grade 2 for reporting Robotics (a topic that he chose), while he got 2 special awards (Best in Materials).
His dad was the one in charge in making his materials while I help him in the expo paper and what to say in the presentation. So that special awards are actually for his dad hahahaha.
For the 3rd and 4th quarter last school year 2016-2017, the science teacher told them to choose a topic, an invention in particular to report in class. He said that he will grade the concept so it’s okay if it is not a working invention. It was also indicated in the guidelines that it should be an original concept, something that they have tackle in the previous reports or discussions and could have benefitΒ the world.
With that in mind, the first thing we thought of was a “teleportation” device. With the traffic we are experiencing in our everyday lives this was what we think we badly need. We already thought of the materials to show in class, but unfortunately when I was making the paper I cannot put anything in it. This idea was a fiction that we just seen in movies, that’s why until now nobody can make it into reality.
Then Ren, showed us Sweden’s power plants wherein they only have 1% trash because they convert their trashes into energy. Of course, we need to make something original so we thought of why not make it into a robot since Ren loves robots so much. We did a research first if someone invented it already, this is a nice concept so we were surprised that nobody thought of it yet.
There is a trash eating robot on YouTube but what it does is just collect trashes from house to house. It doesn’t convert the trashes into energy.
Voila!!! a concept we were so proud of, please welcome TRASHIE – the trash eating robot
Here’s the video of Ren while doing the report plus the Q and A portion
Unfortunaltely, he did not get the Best in Science Expo award for this invention/concept and I haven’t talked to his Science teacher about it yet. Whatever his explanation is, it doesn’t matter anymore. I just hope next time there would be co-judges on every expo so that he’s not the only one who have the say.
I’m proud of this work that’s why I’m sharing it here. I hope this concept will be put into reality by engineers, scientist or whoever out there. Having this will solve our problem with plastics and will help us to have affordable energy at home.

Oh, how cool. What a neat little idea. I think it’s so important for kids to be creative and use their mind to their full potential. This is really awesome! So very smart!
Rebecca Swenor says
This is indeed a great idea. Kudos to him for all his effort and to you both for helping him. Trashie could really be something some day. Thanks for sharing his amazing achievements.
David Elliott says
If someone could make such a thing to convert trash items to energy, it would be absolutely amazing. He may not have won for what he did but he definitely came up with an idea that he might be able to dig into later and be the first to create such a thing.

The science expo looks cool and fun! I am sure my kids would love to go there! They love robot!

it’s just a school π and not everyone made a robot to present in class.

This is awesome and such a fantastic idea! You must be so proud!

This is fabulous! And he totally should have won! I know it’s not high on your priority list, but I’d love to know why he didn’t! This is something we definitely need.
Mommy Levy says
I don’t know why, it really depends on the Science teacher’s mood that day.

Wow, your son is so smart. Nice initiative from him. Hopefully kids will be like him. I’ll look forward on his future projects!

That little robot is so cute and very creative!

What a cool science project. I used to live that time of year where we really had to put our thinking caps on to create a scientific display. Very cool.
Danik says
Great post and hope your son makes it in the future.

Now your son could be onto something wonderful here. This little robot could become a reality and help with all the trash in the world.
