Science Expo: Organic Farming Report
The Expo report in my son’s school is a quarterly project for Science. It is hard because parents need to be creative in doing the script. My rule of thumb when helping Ren is that it should be light and entertaining since the audience are mostly kids (parents are allowed to watch also). Also, it should be easy to understand and we need to provide more visual reference for Ren to report it better (since the pictures are his cues).
Ren needs to understand the report also so that he can answer the questions of his teacher after the presentation.
He got the Best in Science Expo report for the 1st Quarter. That was because at that time they were allowed to choose their own topic and Ren chose Robotics. He likes it so much, so he nailed it.
For 2nd quarter, we did not do well. But, I like the part when we showed the video of his classmates that he interviewed for the report. Ren and I loves it when the audience smile, had fun and enjoys his report. One of his classmates even told me that she always look forward to Ren’s report because it’s cool.
For this 3rd quarter, I was expecting that he will get an award even just a minor one since the teacher surprisingly gave a few of them last 2nd quarter. Besides the expected Best in Science Expo award, the teachers gave out Best in Costume award, Best in Materials award, Best in Questions and Answers etc.
I would have loved him to get an award because a minor award is equivalent to 1 quiz exemption and for the Best in Science Expo, the teacher gives a Midterm exemption. Ren’s 3rd quarter grades are quite low so we were aiming even for just a quiz exemption, but unfortunately it didn’t happen. I guess it depends on the teacher’s mood.
Ren’s 3rd Quarter Science Expo was held last December, he was one of the first 3 out of 9 students to report. The other 6 students did their report on the first day of class in January because of cancelled classes due to the storm. I needed to mention it because we only had limited time to prepare. Yes the expo topic was given few weeks ahead of time but because we had a lot of other things for school that we needed to do, we just finished preparing and practicing his report a few days before the presentation.
Anyway, to all the moms in Ren’s school especially to those who will have their kids enrolled here for their elementary years, watch this to give you an idea on how a Science Expo is held.
TIP: Usually the one who gets the award does an experiment that shows the actual process of his/her report.
