How to Be More Active with Kids
We all know that staying physically active is important for our health. However, with the schedules we have, that can be a bit hard to do. Kids face the same challenge, especially if they are of school-going age. Because of the mental stimulation provided by the different gadgets they may have, kids can be reluctant to get out of their seats and be physically active. Today, we are going to look at how you can be physically active with your kids so both of you can benefit from some physical activities.
Choose Activities That Are Age-Appropriate
It is important to choose physical activities that are age and developmentally appropriate that your kids enjoy and that you can do together. For younger kids and even teens, a bike ride around the neighborhood or simple soccer or basketball games are all easy enough no matter their age.
Play with Them
Although it is good to encourage your kids to join a sport or be engaged in another physical activity, it does not benefit you in any way if you do not join them. So, make an effort to join them regularly and participate. In many cases, it does not have to be at a dedicated sports field as you can set aside some small space in your backyard for this.
Physical activities that can be done indoors are also encouraged if you do not have a dedicated space outdoors and do not wish to travel to a field. Getting a golf simulator, for example, is a good way of staying active while not going outside. Turn Off the Gadgets
Limiting the amount of time your kids spend in front of a computer or TV or looking at their phones and tablets is encouraged to help kids get more active. You can then encourage them to use the free time they gain for more physical activities. Make a point to do the same so you can join them when they have their screens and gadgets turned off whenever you can.
Make Physical Activity a Priority
While it is easy to say you will exercise or be active with the kids a certain number of times per month, it is equally important to set some time aside to do so. Look at your calendar and that of your kids to find some time where you can be all together and set that time aside for physical activity.
It might seem hard at the beginning, but once you get into this habit, it will become easier. Try to incorporate some fun activities so that physical activity and exercise do not seem like a chore.
Be a Role Model
Your kids watch and mimic your actions. So, if you do not get into the habit of being physically active, they also might not. On the other hand, if they see you exercising and having fun, they will want to mimic that and therefore start being active all by themselves.
Make it a Social Activity
Kids love doing things with other kids. To make physical activity more fun, it is always a good idea to invite other kids to join in on the activities and fun. By making it a social activity, the kids will stay engaged and accountable to everyone else who routinely participates with them.
Regular physical activity has been shown to help kids stay healthy which can help them fight diseases. Studies also suggest physically active kids are smarter, feel less stressed, and have a healthy outlet for all their extra energy. If you make a point of participating with them, you will realize the same benefits too.
