How to choose a good quality face mask?

I want to make sure that my family is healthy in this pandemic. I always stock up on nutritious food, take vitamins to boost our immunity and disinfect our house every now and then. Whenever I go out, I make sure to bring an alcohol with me and put on a face mask.

Cloth Mask– This is the cheapest and easiest to find nowadays plus it is reusable. But based on a study which tested masks against exposure to 0.02-1 micron particles, the cloth masks were only able to filter 60% on adults, while only 51.9% on children 5 to 11 years of age. If you don’t have a choice, it is recommended to put tissue as a filter inside the cloth mask to give additional protection but it’s not guaranteed.

Disposable Face Mask – The disposable face mask was able to filter 78.6% (adult) and 73.3% (child) 0.02-1 micron particles. You may not feel sick but this mask will give you higher protection from those who are sick that you might encounter because of the added layer and material used. Surgical masks are made of nonwoven fabric, so they’re usually the safest option for healthcare workers who don’t have access to an N99 or N95 mask.

KN95 Face Mask – N95 mask offers more protection than a surgical mask does because it can filter out both large and small particles when the wearer inhales. This one is your best choice if you will be in a crowded area or in the hospital.

In this day and age of pandemic, protection is beyond covering the face. We should be vigilant in choosing the right type of protection in protecting our livelihood, our loved ones, and most of all our lives.
