Let us learn more about Homeschooling
Did you know that George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, Gen. Douglas Mac Arthur, C.S. Lewis, Pearl S. Buck and Florence Nightingale were all Homeschooled students?
I was not aware of homeschooling until I heard the testimonials from other mommy bloggers who are doing it. I heard that a 6 years old boy can be accelerated to a Grade 3 level if he can pass a DEPed exam, and that is possible through homeschooling.
To know more about Homeschooling, I attended the Expo Kid4 at Rockwell where HAPI (Homeschooling Association of the Philippine Islands) is one of the sponsors. Here, we were welcomed by the guest speaker Mr. Edric Mendoza.
He explained to us the five tools of a successful D.I.Y. homeschooling.
These are:
RULER – it represents the context in which you will home school. Like are you going to enroll in an accredited organization or you will go about it independently? Like a ruler, contexts set boundaries for what you can and cannot do.
HAMMER – this represents the what and how of homeschooling. What will you teach and how will you teach it? Maximum impact is dependent on choosing and creating a tailor fit curriculum for your child.
Learning Content can be customized, with a range wide of textbooks you can choose from.
SANDPAPER – it refines and round out rough edges, enrichment activities like music, art, sports, home economics and livelihood training will give your child a well-rounded education that develops their total character as a person.
There are growing numbers of service providers for music, arts, PE and life skills programs that you can choose from.
SHARPENING STEEL – this represents a support group that will benefit you. When parents get together to share experiences, offer encouragements, exchange insights, ideas, techniques and best practices, it translates to a more effective homeschooling.
Supports Groups like H.O.M.E. Library, are rising to the occasion as parents recognize the need to consult and get encouragement from others who are in the same journey.
PLUMB LINE – this is the important tool in homeschooling. It is a standard of measurement that determines successful outcomes. You must define what true success is for your child and let that guide your homeschooling.
Why do you think most homeschooled children are achievers? It is because their teachers are their loving parents who nurtured them the most.
In the Philippines, a lot of Filipino parents are homeschooling by choice since they discovered its priceless benefits.

I really look up to Edrick. From what I see (we go to the same church, although I go to the one in Cagayan de Oro city) he is a great Christian, dad, and husband.
I do not homeschool my kids, though…but I know it can work very well if the parents can get involved.
If my circumstances are different than what I have now I’d definitely homeschool my kids…language alone is something I need to consider. π Thanks for the info sis….
