Tips on How to Make a Small Area Look Big
Nowadays most people have many household items and furniture which cannot fit in a standard room. Some old houses have smaller rooms which make arranging household items a challenge when you move in. There is no way you can expand the size of your living room if you live in a rental house. Therefore, the only option is to make small rooms appear bigger.
Your living room might be cluttered with several items on the floor, which make it difficult to move around. Some rooms might have so many items in that you have to wedge through the door to get in or out. You might get stuck in such a room in case there is an emergency and you need to get out as quickly as possible. The only solution to such a problem is replacing some furniture with dual-purpose furniture. Such furniture creates more space by providing storage for some small items. This makes a small area appear bigger.
Tips for making a small area appear bigger
1) Use multi-purpose furniture and Hidden storage
A small room has a limited storage capacity. You can store more items if you go for dual-use furniture and items with hidden storage. A good example of a multi-purpose furniture is an ottoman. An ottoman can be used as a table, chair and it also offers storage. Hidden storage reduces clutter on the floor and increases the floor space on the view.
Some beds have hidden storage spaces which allow you to keep some items out of sight. The main advantage of using such a bed is that it can accommodate most of your clothes, thus eliminating the need of installing a wardrobe. The hidden storage area can be also be used to keep some important documents out of sight. It is not as secure as a safe but it makes it harder for people to find some of your important items, especially if they don’t know the presence of a hidden storage on your bed. Multipurpose sofas also have a hidden storage area which can accommodate various items. Some sofas can also be used as beds, hence you don’t need to buy another bed for your visitors.
2) Keep some items on shelves
There are many small personal items that can occupy a lot of space on the floor if they are not stored in the right manner. Most people have multiple pairs of shoes, sandals and many books. It is wise to stuff these items on shelves to free up some space on the floor. If you want to install or repair a shelf or any other item in your house, you can find high quality services at examples of handyman services and other sites that offer high quality services. Always make sure that the pockets of the shelves have some spaces to create depth and appear airy. In case you have many small items, install floor-to-ceiling shelves to accommodate more stuff and make the ceiling look higher.
3) Use several rugs on the floor
Positioning of rugs on the floor is important because if you don’t get it right, the room will appear smaller. Place different rugs under several objects such as sofa and coffee table. Different rugs make the room look bigger than ever. Rugs with repeating patterns allow the eye to follow the colors thus making the room look bigger.
4) Select the right table
A table is an important piece of furniture in a room. A small room might accommodate just one table. If you use the room as a living room and dining room at the same time, pick a multipurpose table. Pick a table that is wide enough and offers comfort. Table designs with drop leaves or removable leaves give you a lot of space. That said, you can explore local shops to find a table that complements your room’s style and dimensions. Alternatively, if you’re looking for something more tailored, consider searching for a “handyman near me in Newberg” or a similar phrase on the Web to create a custom piece that fits your space perfectly. Bespoke carpentry ensures the table is crafted to your exact needs and aesthetic preferences.
5) Use furniture that keeps the floor visible
Choose sofas, tables, TV stands and shelves with legs so that the floor remains visible. The space underneath the furniture allows more light to illuminate the floor, thus making the room look more open and big. Glass coffee tables with legs are also ideal in a small room for the transparent glass allow more light to reach the floor.
6) Stick to monochromatic colours
Avoid contrasting colours in a tiny room because some of them attract the eyes more thus closing space between objects and making a room appear smaller. Monochromatic colors don’t distract the eyes. Select your favorite color and go for items with different tones, tints or shades of the same hue. Items which you should consider their color before buying include furniture, curtains, carpets, fittings and ornaments. Cool colors such as white, light green and shades of blue usually brighten a room and make it appear spacious.
The curtains and walls should also have the same color to avoid intruding the space. This allows the walls and curtains to blend in and make the room appear bigger.
7) Stick to white or stripped floors
White floors are easy on human eyes and they tend to make a room appear bright and spacious. If you want to break the monotony of white color, you can go for stripped floors. A floor with alternating black and white stripes appear longer, thus tricking the brain to think that the room is bigger.
8) Have accent pieces or artwork in the room
The only way to draw people’s attention to a certain point in a room is to have accent pieces or artwork. You can position unique flowers or ornamental plants in a certain corner to beautify the house. Dramatic artwork makes the room interesting. These items draw people’s attention thus creating a wide view which makes the room appear wide and spacious.
9) Use big sofas
A big sofa is ideal for a small room than several individual seats since it can accommodate more people within a small area. This furniture will make people think that the room is wide.
10) Use shelves with different hues
Color coded shelves make the wall appear longer and wider. This technique is perfect for rooms with shelves that run from the floor to the ceiling.
11)Draw people’s eyes towards the ceiling
If the floor of your room is dull, ensure that the ceiling is painted white or any other cool colors attract the eye. You might also position some shelves close to the ceiling to create additional space on the floor and draw people’s eyes upwards. This ensures that people focus more on the ceiling than the floor and this makes the room feel bigger.
It is difficult to arrange several living room furniture in a small area. The only way to keep a room, spacious and accommodate more items at the same time is to use multipurpose furniture. Choosing the right rug designs, using shelves and picking the right living room table will make your room look bigger.
