On Being a Teacher and Some Realizations
I mentioned on my old post that I wanted to become a teacher, but unfortunately I can’t find the time to study again and get a certificate to be called one. But, fate is going my way because this May 2014 I experienced to become one.
If you are a long time follower of this blog, you should know that I tried to homeschool Ren for 1 year. I didn’t know that doing that and talking about it in the neighborhood will give me the break that I am waiting for.
As of now, I am tutoring 3 kids (imagine that!) in the neighborhood. They are all girls and are almost of the same age.
I am teaching them reading.
This new job is one of the reasons why I don’t attend blogging events that much these days. I am busy preparing these girls for Grade 1 for this coming school year.
I am not a typical traditional teacher. I teach “reading” using fun activities (will show it to you soon, so that you can also do it with your kids).
A progressive method is what I learned from the teachers at my son’s school. That is the advantage pala of staying at school and picking the brain of the teachers hahaha.
While doing my usual muni-muni time, I realized some things:
- The school should not base the level of the students based on their age. It should be based on their capability. A comprehensive entrance exam is needed to do this.
- To all the parents (including me), let us all be reminded that Teachers are just our kid’s guide for a better future. They are not magicians to do whatever we expect our kids should be doing right now. They can help our kids improve their skills but it takes time, continuous reminders and a lot of practice. Please remember that teachers are not with our kids 24 hours a day to teach them everything that we want them to learn.
I am enjoying tutoring the kids. It is a dream job for me since I can do it at my own time and at our own house. I even ask Ren, who is very good in reading, to join me in teaching my students. It is a socialization opportunity for him as well. I was able to hit 2 birds in one stone, amazing right?
Stay tuned for my lessons on teaching CVC words and SIGHT/DOLCH words.

Hi, Mommy Levy! I’m Mars and I’m a Montessori pre-school teacher. Your number 1 realization caught my attention because it’s a very Montessori principle. In Montessori, we have mixed-age classes so children of different ages are in the same class together and you can really see how a 3 year-old may already be doing something a 5-year old is doing, etc. So I really agree with you.
I’m glad that you are able to experience and fulfill your dream of teaching! Looking forward to reading more of your posts.
