All about Primary Complex
More and more Pinoy babies are diagnosed to have Primary Complex. My son Ren is not an exception, he was diagnosed to have it when he was just 1 year old and 2 months. I would like to share what I learned about this curable disease so that more moms and dads out there will know what to do.
What is a Primary Complex?
Primary Complex is also known as Tuberculosis and kids that live in Southeast Asia are most prone to have it. This bacteria (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) can be spread by an adult to young children through coughing, sneezing, talking, and even breathing.
What are the symptoms of Primary Complex?
1. The most common sign is prolonged cough
2. weight loss or loss of appetite
3. enlarged lymph nodes in the neck area
4. some may have fever during the afternoon
How does Primary Complex be diagnosed?
Ren was ask to undergo a chest x-ray. If the kid is negative with the chest x-ray the Pedia will advise you to have a skin test just to be sure.
How does Primary Complex be treated?
Ren’s pedia prescribed 3 medicines: Rifampicin, Pyrazinamide an Isoniazid (from UNILAB) the prescibed dosages depends on your kid’s weight. Ren took those medicines for 6 months then was advised to have a skin test again after 6 months to check if the virus is already gone. His cousin took it for 9 months to be virus free.
The pedia told us that all adults in the house should undergo a chest x-ray to check if there were any of us who have the virus since the child will not be cured if the positive adult will not also do something to get rid of the virus. It’s a good thing there was nobody in the house who had the virus back then.

Nung May 2018 nagpa xray kami ng 5 yrs. Old ko na anak tapos nag positive siya sa xray for PTB so nirefer kami para sa skin test negative namn .. pero sabi mag inom pa rin kami for six months . So natapos namn namin siya for 6 months . Nung Nov 2018 , kaya lang nilagnat ulit yung anak ko nung Feb last week dhil sa ubo at sipon pero pina xray ulit kami so lumabas meron pa rin siya .. ang tanong ko lang if negative sa skin test dapt pa bang magtake ng gamot ? Pero positive sa Xray .. now kasi inoobserbahan siya na kpag hindi nawala yung ubo niya for 1 week magbabalik ulit kami sa gamutan .. Pina continue yung co amox niya at salbutamol pati vit. Niya ..
as far as I can remember dapat negative both skin and xray, so kung positive sa isa dapat pa din mag gamot

Sa experience mo ba Mommy, kahit under med c baby mo, may ubo pa rin ba sha? And if yes, how long sha bago nawala nung under medication sha. Thank you in advance Mommy! π
as far as I can remember, hindi sya inuubo habang naka med. Mommy, better to consult the pedia siguro if gaano katagal dapat ang ubo kasi as far as I know iba ang gamot sa PC at iba din sa cough. I’m not sure though, ang tagal na kasi, 11 years old na si Ren.

Hello mga mommies yung anak ko din nadiagnose na may PC 2 days palang syang umiinon ng gamot bale 4 med yun…yung 2 sa umaga 30 minutes before kumain tapos sa tanghali yung ethambutol at vitamins nya yung pyrazinamide sa gabi ko na ipinapainom.

Ang primary complex po ba hindi nawawala ng kusa?weird lang kasi last april nadiagnosed na may primary complex daughter ko thatβs the time din na need siya admit dor roseola measles nagkatigdas kasi siya and un inexray din siya pero until now dpa namin natreat ang pc nya..then nagkafever siya nito lang sat dahil sa ubo since fever nya abot na almost 4days pati ang cough dinala ko na med city and ayun sabi ko baka pwede din xray just to be sure pero and lumabas sa xray pneumonia and need lang mag antibiotic..nagtataka ako na di nakita na may pc siya eh same xray din nakita before na may pc siya..iniisip ko po na possible kaya na kusa mawala ang primary complex without taking meds?kasi after april masigla and mas naging ok katawan nya nito lang sya nagkasakit ulit possible na nahawa sa school..so yun po question mo if may idea kayo na possible ba mawala ang pc ng di natreat?tnx in advance.. π

Hello ma’am. Na diagnosed din baby ko n my pc. 11 months n sya ngayon.. 2 xray nya my lympadenopathy tapos ng ppd test din sya 5mm ang result. Si baby wala nman sya kahit anong symptoms. Ask lang po nung nagtetake yung baby nyo my mga side effects bang lumabas? naninilaw daw ang balat pg nagtake ng mga meds? Tnx in advance.

hi, my friend ako nung bata pa sya nagkaroon sya ng PC, and then na threated naman na after 6months , then ung mga x ray result naman cleared naman before, 24yrs old na sya ngaun, ang worry lng ng friend ko is kng nag lleave ba ng scar sa lungs kpag nagka PC ka nung bata ka, or kng nakikita ba un sa Xray result?
As per doctor said the scar will be cleared after 2yrs.
I have PC when I was 2yrs old. Now I am 27. All my previous xrays are normal (for local employment lang) . Now I am worried because I will have my medical exam for my overseas employment. Im really hoping and praying na walang scar ang lungs ko. π Sobrang higpit kase nila sa xray kaya di ko maiwasan maparanoid π’ to think na kahit ung walang history ng PC or any lung problem nagkakaroon sila ng findings na may scar daw. so unfit to work na agad. Hays. Sana tlaga clear ako all the way. π

My 2 years old daughter has primary complex. 4 months of medication nakami but everytime I gave the medicine she refused to take it. She’s always crying everytime she take it. Sometimes I forgot to gave the medicine. On and off ang pag inom n’ya. Should I worry na hindi po gagaling si baby sa primary complex n’ya?
as per advise of our pedia before bali wala kung hindi religious o tuloy tuloy ang pag papainom, kaya I usually stick a schedule on our ref para maalala ko. Ask your pedia also.

Hello mommy, my lo is also diagnosed with pc. Yes, baliwala ang medication if di naiinom ng tama and regularly.. also the bacteria might become drug resistant.. so importante na tama ang paginom ng gamot.

ang alam ko at natatandaan, pag positive na sa xray di na kailangan magpa skin test. So baka yun are reason ni Pedia bakit di na kayo pinag skintest
Hi mommy! Yun pamangkin ko (1 year 6mos.) po positive siya sa xray pero mejo duda yun pedia sa result ng xray, nagskintest sila at negative naman ang result. So hindi napo sila nag gamot. Inaddress na lang yata yun ubo ng bata.

My daughter is only 8month old and she has a primary complex, she now starting to take medication … I’m a bit worried though i’m a nurse but it is really much difficult that at a young age she’s suffering from it. Be cautious mommy’s for signs and symptoms specially the on and off coughing for a week or so, if it happens ask your dr. Or change your pedia…. My baby has it’s regular check up but then i notice that she’s not getting better until i decided to change my pedia, her new pedia requested for an xray and the result was lymph nodes are seen inside her lungs and that is not normal… Please check and read some details on the internet to have an idea about the disease.. This is part of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD) which is common to the young ages….primary complex is a child term for Tuberculosis…

it supposed to be normal na after 6 months. If not, let all the members of the family tested for TB.

My 8 yrs old daughter was diagnosed with pc nag take kmi ng med for 6 months, she gained weight at tumangkad . Sabi ni pedia ok na daw, pero after few months after the medication pina flu vaccine ko sya. After that uli inuubo ubo uli sya at slight fever doctor gave her antibiotics, last september po yun, gumaling sya, now a week ago inubo uli at maplema. 1 week yung cough nya, dala uli kay pedia , sabi ko bakit ang bilis nya tamaan ng ubo uli. Michael and Hannah both have PC. They are taking Curazid Forte (Isoniazid) everyday since May. They also have asthma. We don’t know where they got it because we all had our chest xrays and it was clear. I also required our maids to have xrays and none of them had TB. Hopefully, Michael and Hannah will stop their medications this November.
Hello, my mother is the one watching my 7 month old baby. Wayback, year 2006, she was diagnosed with TB and had undergone the 6-month medication. Just last night I discovered a pea-sized lymph node on my baby’s neck. I never see any other symptoms yet. Could it be PC? Could it be from my mother? Is the TB bacteria or virus will remain and still active with the person already treated for 6 month and still communicable?

Nag gain naman po sya ng weight, palakain naman po sya, minsan bigla nlng xa nilalagnat, tanong q lng po dahil po ba to sa PC nya?

Tpos na po kmi ng treatment 2 or 3 years ago na pero yung bean-sized na lymph node is mapi-feel ko pa rin sa neck nya. Meron po ba ditong ganun rin ang case? Worried po kasi ako kasi baka iba na sya: like cyst..but my doctor told me na normal lng po yun na di sya mawawala agad..Has anyone here with similar case asked their doctor kng kelan sya mawawala?

I only stumbled upon this post as I’m also looking for answers. I’m worried because my son was initially diagnosed with PC when he was 2 years old thru xray, I had a second opinion and we were asked for him to undergo the skin test which turned out to be negative and the second doctor read the xray result done by the hospital we first went into and said it’s also negative so he had us stop the 6 month medication (we were on our 1st month then). I asked about the pea-sized lymph node on the side of his neck and was told it’s normal, but he’s now 6 years old and the lymph node would keep showing up if he has a cough and never totally disappeared. I’m also getting too anxious so I would be asking if it’s possible to have another skin test done again as we were also informed by a nurse friend that Primary Complex has a recurrence.
Hi, my son who is now 2 years mayroon syang primary complex. After 4 months of taking his medication as prescribed by his pedia. Ngayon mayroon naman syang diarrhea. Nagpacheck up kami and sabi ng secretary dapat daw stop muna yung kidz kit 2. Ndi daw pede kasing pagsabayin ang intake ng gamot para sa diarhea and kidz kit 2. I ask her why, explain na lang daw ng doctor. And then sabi naman ng doctor (reliever na doctor) ok lng daw na mag intake ng sabay na gamot (zinc sulfate syrup and kidz kit 2) medyo confusing lang. Please advice me kung ano gagawin ko.

I think primary complex is a bacterial disease. There’s no virus involve.
hello, my 7 year old son was prescribed by his pedia to take isoniazid only for 3 months as a prophylaxis because he sort of tested positive to skin test- sort of since there is only very little redness on the area. aside from the skin test, he has no other indication of primary complex, except for coughing (no sputum) in which could also be due to his asthma. no weightloss, in fact my son is chubby, just the cough and that little redness from the skin test.
i was just wondering, if he will be allowed to travel as we have planned a vacation to Hong Kong months prior to his diagnosis. he will only be on his 2nd month of treatment during the travel which will be on may.
i totally forgot about the travel when we went to the doctor, in case you are wondering why i didn’t ask the pedia about it. maybe someone experienced this sort of thing and could give me some advice on what to do. thanks in advance

my child is only 2 months and 3 weeks old. first time she had a cough which is not persistent cough, but the sound seems there is mucus in her throat. she has no fever, with good appetite and shes gaining weight. 3 days after we went to our pedia. our pedia suspected that our baby has pneumonia so she prescribed an antibiotic, pausok (nebulize), antihistamin and disudrin and ordered an xray. after 3 days of waiting for the xray result our baby has primary kock’s infection. our pedia was not convinced to the result when she looked at the plate of the xray. she told us to continue all the prescribed med to our baby and after a week of medication we’ll go back to her for another xray just to confirm the previous result. …i know our baby is too young to have PC…and to have a second xray. is it ok to have our child a second xray? our plan is to have a second opinion to a pediatric pulmonologist…. anyone knows a good pedia pulmonologist?

kailangan mo sya ipa check up ulit. Kasi bumabalik ang primary complex lalo na pag di na treat or may kasambahay kayo na meron (TB ang tawag sa adult).
My angel 4.5 is diagnosed with primary complex…. Any restrictions in food or other thing has 2 b taken care..
as far as I remember they can eat anything naman. Just follow the schedule of taking in medicines

Nagagamot ang Primary Complex as long na nagco cooperate lahat ng tao sa bahay. Nakukuha kasi ito ng mga bata sa mga matatanda. Kung may inuubo sa bahay, dapat din magpa check up para parehong nag gagamot.

Hi Madel, as far as I remember wala naman particular na diet. You can ask your pedia about it, pero wala ako matandaan na may bawal sa anak ko before.

I didn’t know that. You should clear it up with your pediatrician. Don’t worry, just follow the doctors advice and everything will be just fine. My son is now 6 years old and he is doing great.
I think you should confirm it also to his doctor to check if the scar still remain so you can plan about his future. I think you knew that it’s very difficult to find job once the scar still remain on his lungs.
i had a primary complex when i was six. is there a chance that it will go back when i get old?
I think when you are older it is called Tuberculosis and not primary complex
my daughter suffered from Primary complex too when she was 2yrs old and only to find out that the nanny was not letting her eat on time…that’s one reason why I resigned from work anymore. glad Ren is already virus free, just like my Rem:)
