Pres. Aquino signs Anti-Bullying Act (RA 10627) of 2013
Good news to all parents like me who are afraid of Bullying, Pres. Noynoy Aquino signed into law the Anti-Bullying Act (RA 10627) last September 6. Wherein it requires elementary and secondary schools to adopt policies to prevent and address bullying.
The act defines bullying as:
“any severe or repeated use by one by one or more students of a written, verbal or electronic expression, or a physical act or gesture, or any combination thereof, directed at another student that has the effect of actually causing or placing the latter in reasonable fear of physical or emotional harm or damage to his property; creating a hostile environment at school for the other student; infringing on the rights of the other student at school or materially and substantially disrupting the education process or the orderly operation of a school.”
School superintendents will have six months after the law becomes effective to draw up policies to address bullying. Proven bullies will receive disciplinary action and will be required to attend a rehabilitation program.
My son is still young to know and identify a person who is a bully, and I am sure at a young age his classmates don’t know it too. But I am glad that with this law, his Elementary and Secondary years will be a lot better (I hope so). I know it is also our duty as parents to make sure that he feels secure and loved so that even if one person would someday mock him he would not be affected that easily because he knows that there are other people who believes and stand by him. But with this new law, I feel that my son will be safer with the school environment.
